
In Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, a team from the electricity department faced a violent attack while attempting to disconnect power connections over unpaid dues. The shocking incident took place in Kaneta village of Bahjoi Kotwali area, where a group of miscreants chased and assaulted the officials. A video of the attack has surfaced on social media, rapidly gaining attention.
Electricity Department Files Complaint with Police
Following the assault on the department’s staff, electricity officials filed a formal complaint with the police. According to reports, the team had visited the village to cut off power connections of defaulters who had failed to pay their electricity bills. However, local residents strongly opposed the action. As soon as the team attempted to disconnect the supply, angry villagers attacked and brutally thrashed them.
Over 1,250 FIRs Filed for Power Theft in December 2024
This incident comes in the backdrop of an extensive crackdown on power theft in the district. In December 2024 alone, 1,250 FIRs were registered in Sambhal for electricity theft, with penalties totaling ₹5.2 crore. Earlier investigations had uncovered widespread power theft in mosques, madrasas, and residential areas, prompting authorities to tighten enforcement measures.
A high-profile raid led by the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP) in Nakhasa and Deepasrai areas of Sambhal Sadar at 5 AM had also exposed illegal power usage. Shockingly, equipment used for electricity theft was even recovered from a mosque during the operation.
Strict Warnings Against Power Theft
Following the massive crackdown, DM Dr. Rajendra Pensia issued a strong warning, stating that strict action would be taken against those involved in power theft. He emphasized that the campaign against electricity theft would continue until every illegal connection was removed.
Authorities discovered power theft in 150-200 houses, including religious places such as mosques and madrasas. The DM further announced that FIRs would be lodged against violators, and penalties would be enforced to recover losses incurred by the government.
This violent attack on electricity department officials underscores the resistance authorities face while combating power theft. The police have launched an investigation into the incident, and legal action is expected against those responsible for the assault.
